Peace

I will be selling the original of this in my art sale this coming Friday, and prints are also available. All proceeds from print sales will go toward the Mercer Mission in Japan for crisis relief.


This has a rather interesting story behind it. I originally wanted to paint something joyful and warm and inspiring, like an oasis in the middle of a desert with a really cute palm tree.

So I painted the background bright oranges and yellows and it was absolutely gorgeous.

But.

Then I lost all inspiration for it. I stared at it for hours and could get nothing out of it. Which led me to become very frustrated. So then I mixed all my dark colors together to make this ugly blackish ooze, and I smeared the canvas with it as angrily as I could.

When I was finished, I noticed that a part in the upper left hand corner hadn't been completely covered and looked somewhat like a cloud. So I tried to repeat the cloudmaking process at other points on the canvas, and achieved my mission through the glorious rediscovery of fingerpainting.

And then I got the idea to paint the tree, so I did. Voila.

It's awesome what happens when things don't go as planned.
